While Nigeria thumped the French Polynesians 6-1 in the FIFA Confederations Cup on Monday, their head coach Stephen Keshi looked less than impressed after watching his side waste a number of goal-scoring opportunities in Belo Horizonte.

Uruguay themselves were similarly toothless against Spain but front man Diego Forlan is not concerned.

"We knew before coming to Brazil that our most important game was against Nigeria and nothing has changed because we lost to Spain," he said.

Brazil vs Japan - Opening Game of the FIFA Confederations Cup - June 15th, 2013

The competition hosts Brazil and Asia Cup winners Japan are in Group A along with Mexico and Italy. Brazil and Japan have met nine times already and South American side so far are undefeated. Most recently Brazil defeated Japan 4-0 in a friendly game in Wroclaw in October of 2012.

Brazil has played two friendlies. They were held 2-2 by England, but recently beat a weakened France 3-0.

Japan qualified for this tournament by beating Australia (1-0) in extra time in the Asian Cup in January 2011. Since then they have also qualified for the World cup, so this tournament will be excellent preparation for next year’s assault.

The head to head between Brazil and Japan is all in favour of the South Americans. Nine times they have met before and seven of those games have ended in wins for Brazil, with Japan holding on for draws in the other two. The goal tally in those nine matches stands at 24 for Brazil and just four for Japan.
